Magento to Shopify Migration: An Enterprise Playbook

Magento (now Adobe Commerce) is a powerful platform. It's also expensive to run, painful to patch, and overkill for 90% of the brands still on it. When Adobe acquired Magento and pushed merchants toward annual licensing costs that start in the low five figures, the migration wave we predicted years ago turned into a flood.

We've rebuilt 200+ Shopify stores, and a growing share of them started life on Magento. A magento to shopify migration is the most technically demanding replatform we do, not because Shopify is hard, but because Magento stores accumulate a decade of custom code, odd database schemas, and SEO equity that one mistake can wipe out. In 2023 we watched a seven-figure beauty brand lose 60% of its organic traffic in six weeks because their previous agency skipped the redirect mapping. It took us four months to recover it.

This playbook is the process we follow on every Magento migration. By the end, you'll know exactly what to migrate, what to leave behind, how to preserve your rankings, and where projects usually go wrong.

Why Enterprise Brands Are Leaving Magento

Adobe Commerce homepage

The usual reasons, in the order clients actually give them:

  1. Total cost of ownership. Adobe Commerce licensing, hosting, security patches, extension fees, and a developer on retainer routinely total $50K–$150K/year before you've sold a single product. Shopify Plus costs roughly $2,300/month with hosting, security, and PCI compliance included.
  2. Upgrade fatigue. Magento 2 upgrades regularly break custom modules. Merchants tell us they budget 2–4 developer weeks per security patch cycle. That's absurd for a store that isn't technically complex.
  3. Talent scarcity. Good Magento developers are rare and getting rarer. Good Shopify developers are everywhere, including on our team.
  4. Speed to market. A theme change on Magento can take weeks. On Shopify, we can redesign and relaunch a storefront in days.

The honest counterpoint: if you have genuinely complex B2B pricing logic, multi-warehouse inventory orchestration, or a headless build with a custom middleware stack, Shopify (even Plus) may not replicate everything out of the box. You can get close with Shopify B2B, Shopify Flow, and metafields, but someone needs to map your requirements honestly before you sign anything. Do that mapping first.

Pre-Migration: The Audit Phase

Everything good about a migration happens before you touch data. We spend the first two to three weeks on discovery, and we rarely regret it.

Start with a full crawl of the Magento store using Screaming Frog. Export every URL: products, categories, CMS pages, blog posts, and filtered navigation pages. This becomes three things: your redirect map, your content inventory, and your SEO baseline.

In Google Search Console, export 16 months of query and page data. Flag every URL that drives more than a handful of clicks per month. Those pages get individual attention during mapping; the long tail gets programmatic redirects.

Then audit your extensions. Magento stores average 15–25 installed extensions, and roughly a third of them have no Shopify equivalent because Shopify handles the problem natively. Layered navigation filters? That's the Shopify Search & Discovery app, free. Customer segmentation and abandoned cart emails? Shopify Email or Klaviyo. Reward points, reviews, subscriptions: all replaceable with apps you've heard of.

Data Mapping: What Moves and What Doesn't

A Magento database is a sprawling thing. Here's how we scope it:

Products. Migrate SKU, title, description, price, compare-at price, inventory, product type (including variants), and images. Map Magento attributes to Shopify metafields. This is where most DIY migrations fall apart, because Magento's EAV attribute system doesn't translate cleanly into Shopify's flat structure. Decide which attributes actually matter for filters and content before you export, not after.

Customers. Export first name, last name, email, and order history. Passwords cannot be transferred. Magento and Shopify hash credentials differently, so every customer will need to reset theirs. Email them before launch, not after. It sounds minor, but a store with 40,000 customers that forgets this step sees a support-ticket spike and a wave of "is this a scam?" replies.

Orders. We usually import 12–24 months of order history for customer service continuity. Older orders can be archived and kept in a reporting tool. Trying to migrate 10 years of transactions usually isn't worth the cost.

Content. CMS pages, blog posts, and category descriptions need to move with their HTML intact. Magento's WYSIWYG editors leave messy markup, which we clean during transfer, because broken internal links and missing images are the top post-migration complaint we hear from merchants who went the cheap route.

What we leave behind: stale customer accounts that never ordered, discontinued product URLs with zero traffic, legacy coupon codes, and extension tables for features Shopify replaces natively. Migration is a chance to declutter. Take it.

The Redirect Map: Where SEO Lives or Dies

This is the single most important section in this playbook. If you read nothing else, read this.

Every URL with organic traffic must 301 redirect to its closest equivalent on the new store. Not the homepage. Not the collection root. The closest equivalent. Redirecting a ranking product page to your homepage tells Google the content is gone, and you'll lose the ranking.

Our process:

  1. Take the Screaming Frog export from the audit phase.
  2. Join it against Google Search Console click data and Google Analytics sessions.
  3. Manually map every URL with meaningful traffic. Yes, manually. On a recent migration with ~8,000 URLs, we hand-mapped about 400 and scripted the rest by pattern (category → collection, product → product, CMS page → page).
  4. Handle edge cases explicitly: trailing-slash variants, .html suffixes that Magento appends, pagination, and parameter URLs from faceted navigation.

Upload the redirects in Shopify's bulk redirect tool (Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects) or via the API before launch day. Then test every high-traffic redirect with a crawler before you flip DNS.

Preserving Rankings Through the Cutover

Redirects are necessary but not sufficient. Here's the rest of the checklist we run:

Keep your titles and meta descriptions. Magento stores often have keyword-rich title tags built over years. Bring them across exactly, then optimize later. Changing platform and titles simultaneously makes it impossible to tell what caused ranking movement.

Migrate structured data deliberately. Check your Magento rich snippets in Google's Rich Results Test and replicate them in your Shopify theme: product schema, review stars, breadcrumbs. Shopify themes ship decent schema, but it's generic. Our average organic lift after a clean migration plus schema work is a big part of how we deliver a 9x average SEO traffic increase across our client base.

Don't block the new store. Staging stores with noindex tags are fine, but forgetting to remove that tag at launch is a classic error. We have a printed launch-day checklist. Nobody memorizes this stuff at 6 a.m. under pressure.

Expect a temporary dip. Even a perfect migration typically sees two to four weeks of fluctuation while Google reprocesses the redirects. Plan your launch outside peak season, and don't panic on day five.

Magento to Shopify Migration Pitfalls (and How to Avoid Them)

Filtered navigation URLs. Magento generates thousands of crawlable faceted-navigation URLs (size, color, price filters). Decide which of these have rankings worth keeping, usually a handful of high-intent combinations, and redirect or recreate those as Shopify collection pages or search pages. Let the rest 404 or 410. If you redirect 20,000 filter URLs, you're just adding crawl noise.

Custom functionality no one documented. Every Magento store has that one script a developer wrote in 2017 that applies bulk discounts for wholesale customers or syncs something to a warehouse. Find these before launch. Interview whoever manages the store daily; they know the weird stuff.

Extension data stuck in tables. Subscription orders, loyalty balances, gift cards: they live in extension-specific tables that standard migration tools ignore. If you use ReCharge, Yotpo, or similar on Magento, talk to the Shopify version of those apps about data porting before you start, not after.

Launching before payment testing. Magento checkouts behave differently from Shopify's. Run full test orders across every payment method and shipping zone. The #1 launch-week bug we see is shipping-rate mismatches that charge customers wrong amounts.

Post-Launch: The First 90 Days

Week one: monitor Google Search Console daily for crawl errors and coverage issues. Fix redirect chains (Magento URL → intermediate → Shopify URL) as you find them, because chains dilute link equity and slow crawling.

Weeks two to four: watch rankings against your exported baseline. Expect recovery of the dip and then growth, assuming redirects and content parity held. This is also when we run PageSpeed Insights on templates and fix the obvious wins, since Magento themes are often heavy and Shopify gives you a clean foundation to build on.

Months two and three: this is where migration pays off. With the replatform risk behind you, start the SEO and CRO work you couldn't do on Magento: proper collection-page content, faster themes, better internal linking. Across our migrations, the brands that treat month three as the starting line are the ones that compound the gains. Across our client work we average a +58% CRO lift, but almost none of it happens before launch stabilizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

A straightforward store with under 1,000 products takes 6–10 weeks including audit, migration, design adjustments, and launch. Enterprise builds with 10,000+ SKUs, B2B logic, or headless requirements run 4–8 months. Anyone promising a two-week enterprise migration is quoting you the data transfer only, not the full job.

Will I lose my SEO rankings when migrating to Shopify?

Not if the redirect map and content parity are handled correctly. A temporary two-to-four-week fluctuation is normal; a permanent loss means something broke, usually redirects to the homepage or removed structured data. Rankings are recoverable either way, but getting it right the first time is dramatically cheaper.

Can I migrate my customer passwords from Magento?

No. Magento and Shopify use incompatible password hashing, so every customer must reset their password. Notify customers by email before launch and consider a post-purchase "set your new password" prompt in order confirmation emails.

What happens to my Magento extensions on Shopify?

Most don't migrate, they're replaced. Shopify handles hosting, caching, security, and checkout natively, so extensions for those simply disappear. Functionality like reviews, loyalty, subscriptions, and advanced search maps to Shopify apps, usually with data-porting support from the app vendor.

Is Shopify Plus worth it for a Magento refugee?

For stores doing roughly $1M+ in annual revenue, usually yes: checkout customization, Shopify Flow automation, higher API limits, and B2B features justify the cost. Smaller stores are fine on Advanced Shopify for a while. We covered the tradeoffs in depth in our Shopify migration guide.
