Shopify Plus Agency: What Actually Changes When You Move Upmarket

We've been a Shopify Plus Partner for years and have rebuilt more than 200 stores across Plus, Advanced, and everything below it. The most common conversation we have with merchants goes something like this: their store is doing well, someone tells them they should "move to Plus," and they come to us asking whether they need a Shopify Plus agency or whether Plus is even the right move. Fair question. Plus starts at $2,000 per month, so it's not a decision you make off a sales page.

Here's what we've learned from the inside: Plus is a genuinely different platform, not just a bigger price tag. But it's different in specific, sometimes boring ways that matter a lot to a $5M brand and barely at all to a $500K one. This post is our honest breakdown of what actually changes when you move upmarket, when a Shopify Plus agency earns its fee, and when we'd tell you to stay where you are.

What a Shopify Plus Agency Actually Does Differently

There's a version of this industry where "Plus agency" is just a badge agencies put on their website. We've seen plenty of those. A real Shopify Plus Partner gets the designation from Shopify based on the volume and quality of Plus stores it builds and manages, which means the practical difference shows up in three places.

First, checkout access. Standard Shopify locks the checkout down tight. On Plus, you get Checkout Extensibility, which lets developers build custom checkout logic through Shopify Functions and UI extensions: custom shipping rules, B2B price logic, gated payment methods, upsells injected into checkout itself. This is where a lot of the conversion wins live, and it's completely off-limits to non-Plus stores.

Second, B2B. Plus includes a full wholesale channel: company profiles, per-company price lists, quantity rules, net payment terms, and customer-specific catalogs. For brands selling retail and wholesale, this eliminates the awkward separate wholesale store most merchants duct-tape together. You can see how we approach this side of the platform on our Shopify development service page.

Third, scale and automation. Plus stores get higher API rate limits, Shopify Flow for automation across your stack, Launchpad for scheduled campaigns, and access to Shopify's priority support tier. Individually, each feature sounds nice. Together, they change how your operations team spends their day.

The Honest Math: Is Plus Worth It?

Shopify Plus pricing has two components. The base license is around $2,000 per month on a one-year term (longer terms negotiate lower). On top of that, if your store clears roughly $800,000 in monthly revenue, Shopify applies a 0.25% revenue share on Plus-driven sales, capped so your all-in cost stays predictable. Standard credit card rates also drop on Plus, typically by 0.15 to 0.30 percentage points depending on volume and region.

Run the numbers on a real store. Say you do $1.5M a month. Your Plus license is $2,000 plus $3,750 in revenue share, call it $5,750. Against that, you get a lower card rate (worth roughly $2,250 a month at 0.15 points saved), checkout extensibility that our CRO work consistently shows is worth more than standard checkout, and B2B tooling that often replaces a $500 to $1,500 per month wholesale app stack. The math usually works at that scale. At $300K a month, it usually doesn't, and we'll say so.

Where Plus Stores Win: The Four Levers

In our rebuild work across Plus stores, four levers account for most of the performance difference between a Plus store done right and a Plus store that wasted its license.

Checkout customization. Checkout Extensibility plus Shopify Functions lets you do things like hide express payment methods on high-fraud orders, reorder shipping options to surface the profitable one, add gift-message fields conditionally, and inject one-click upsells after the payment step. Merchants obsess over product pages, but on a store doing 10,000 orders a month, a 3% checkout lift is 300 orders. That's the biggest single CRO surface in ecommerce.

B2B and wholesale. If you sell to retailers, Plus's native B2B is a step change. Company accounts with assigned sales reps, per-customer pricing without duplicating products, quantity breaks, and net terms handled inside Shopify rather than in a spreadsheet-fueled parallel universe. Our clients who switched from a separate wholesale storefront typically cut wholesale order admin time in half.

Performance at scale. Standard plans handle most stores fine, but heavy catalogs (50,000+ SKUs), high flash-sale traffic, or multi-store architectures push against API limits and theme performance ceilings. Plus gives you the headroom, plus features like Shopify Flow to automate tagging, routing, and inventory logic that an ops person was doing manually.

Expansion and international. Markets on Plus is more flexible: local currencies, regional pricing, duty and tax handling, and storefronts per region when you need them. If international is a real revenue line and not a someday plan, this matters.

When Plus Is NOT Worth It

We turn merchants away from Plus regularly, and it keeps our relationship honest. Don't move up if: you're under roughly $1M in annual revenue and your growth constraint is traffic, not platform capability; you're on Advanced and your only complaint is checkout branding (not worth $2,000 a month); you want it for "better support" alone; or you're hoping Plus will fix a conversion problem that's actually a product, pricing, or offer problem. No license tier fixes a weak offer.

How to Choose Your Migration Partner

If you do make the move, the agency you hire matters more than the plan you pick. Our advice from sitting on the partner side: ask for Plus-specific build examples, not general Shopify portfolios, because checkout extensibility work is a different skill set. Ask who actually writes the Functions and checkout UI extensions, a senior developer or an offshore handoff. Ask about post-launch support, since Plus stores live in their checkout code. And be skeptical of any agency that recommends Plus before asking about your revenue, margins, and B2B mix. That revenue-first questioning is exactly how a first call with any agency, including us, should go.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?

The base license runs about $2,000 per month on a standard one-year term, with longer commitments negotiating it down. Once your store passes roughly $800,000 in monthly revenue, Shopify adds a 0.25% revenue share, with caps that keep total cost predictable. You also pay lower payment processing rates on Plus than on standard plans.

Is Shopify Plus the same as regular Shopify?

Same core platform, different capability set. Plus adds Checkout Extensibility (custom checkout logic via Functions and UI extensions), native B2B wholesale features, higher API limits, Shopify Flow automation, Launchpad, priority support, and better international tooling. If none of those matter to you, you're paying $2,000 a month for a logo.

Can I migrate to Shopify Plus without losing SEO?

Yes, if the migration is done carefully. The risk points are URL changes without redirects, losing structured data, and theme-level meta tag differences. Across our Plus migrations we preserve rankings by mapping every URL one-to-one, carrying over schema markup, and monitoring Search Console for months after launch. Migration is where DIY attempts usually bleed the most traffic.

What's the difference between a Shopify agency and a Shopify Plus agency?

Formally, Plus Partner status is granted by Shopify to agencies with proven Plus build volume. Practically, a Plus agency should show you checkout extensibility work, B2B builds, and multi-store or high-SKU architectures. If an agency's "Plus experience" is a badge and a landing page, keep looking.

When should a store upgrade to Shopify Plus?

Rough rule of thumb from our client work: revenue above $1M to $2M annually, a real wholesale or B2B motion, international expansion that needs local storefronts, or checkout conversion being your biggest lever. If you're upgrading because it "feels like the next step," wait until the math forces the decision.
